So... I'm an idiot. Turns out my iPod Nano must have been left ON while in my backpack cuz the little exclamation point icon was attached to a little battery icon... so once I plugged her in, well, she perked right up. Honeymoon is back on. Thanks for the link Matt. From your link I went to the iPod iconology page and realized this was the little image I saw on the dark screen.
